Background. The aim of this report is to illustrate the photochemotherapeutic schemes described in the literature, and present the experience, of the last 10 years, in the treatment of mycosis fungoides at stages I and II according to the TNM classification. The techniques, indications and limitations of the treatment are discussed.
Methods. Forty patients (23 male, 17 female) affected by mycosis fungoides at stage I and II, underwent to PUVA-therapy. Follow-up after treatment lasted three year.
Results. The results obtained show that PUVA-therapy may delay extracutaneous spreading and in some cases it may be curative. A complete recovery was obtained in 80% of patient at stage I, and in 40% at stage II.
Conclusions. Later studies confirmed the efficacy of PUVA in the treatment of mycosis fungoides as well as the benefit of maintaining PUVA in prolonging remissions.
