Carcinoid of the appendix

Cabano F., Zampetti P., Paolotti D., Bargiggia C., De Medici A.

PDF

The authors report on three cases of carcinoid tumor of the appendix, observed over a span of 20 years at the Istituti of Semeiotica Chirurgica, Patologia Chirurgica II and Clinica Chirurgica II of IRCCS Policlinico ''S. Matteo'', Pavia, Italy. These cases were fortuitously discovered in three young women undergoing appendectomy, due to acute appendicitis. After considering the etiopathogenesis of the pathological aspects of the affection, they dwell upon the aspecificity of the symptomatology related to the appendicular inflammatory pathology (hyperthermia, leucocytosis, peritonism, intense pains in the right lower quadrant). They then underline the difficulty of advanc-ing a definite preoperative diagnosis and an attempt is made to indicate a more or less extensive surgical treatment as elective therapy in the light of the favourable long-term survival of the metastasis-free patients. At the end, the authors speak about the good results obtained during a follow-up from three to seven years later on in the same patients.
