Intraoperative ultrasonography in the diagnosis of liver neoplasms

Mitaritonno M., Pellegrini D., Perrucci S.

PDF

The liver is often the site of primary and secondary cancer. It is for this reason that, as result of the constant development of instrumental diagnosis, pharmacology, anaesthesiological techniques and intensive therapy, development of resective liver surgery has been greatly stimulated. The instrumental diagnosis of liver cancer can today employ several techniques: US, CT scanning, MNR, angiography. The most recent addition is intraoperative US (IOUS). On the basis of data reported in the international literature, the authors analyse the effective validity of this technique, concluding that diagnostic sensitivitiy, specificity and accuracy of IOUS are such that it can really be considered the gold standard for the diagnosis of liver cancer, especially when neoplasy is of small dimensions.
