Background. The aim of this study is to analyze retrospectively the results of personal experience concerning 320 hernioplasties performed on 313 patients over two years (1998-1999) with tension free Rutkow technique.
Methods. A one week, three months and one year follow-up was performed on these patients.
Results. The recurrence rate observed in 290 patients (92%) is 0.3% in agreement with the data reported in the literature.
Conclusions. The pathophysiological peculiarities for which the authors limited Rutkow operation are pointed out: the tension free technique with sutureless mesh and plug according to Rutkow can be applied to indirect hernias Gilbert type 1, 2 and 3 with total integrity of the floor of the inguinal canal and not to direct hernias Gilbert type 4, 5 and trouser hernias (Gilbert 6).
