Tension free hernioplasty with sutureless mesh and plug according to rutkow. Our evaluations

Background. The aim of this study is to analyze retrospectively the results of personal experience concerning 320 hernioplasties performed on 313 patients over two years (1998-1999) with tension free Rutkow technique.
Methods. A one week, three months and one year follow-up was performed on these patients.
Results. The recurrence rate observed in 290 patients (92%) is 0.3% in agreement with the data reported in the literature.
Conclusions. The pathophysiological peculiarities for which the authors limited Rutkow operation are pointed out: the tension free technique with sutureless mesh and plug according to Rutkow can be applied to indirect hernias Gilbert type 1, 2 and 3 with total integrity of the floor of the inguinal canal and not to direct hernias Gilbert type 4, 5 and trouser hernias (Gilbert 6).
