AIM: Treatment of intra-articular fractures of the calcaneus is still debated and there are many different surgical techniques; ORIF is the gold-standard technique. Percutaneous treatment with uniplanar external fixator gets a great because it ensures a good reduction, a stable synthesis, with less risk of soft tissue damage than ORIF. So we bring attention to our experience with the use of mini-external uniplanar calcaneal fixator at the Hospital Vito Fazzi in Lecce.
METHODS: We treated with mini-external uniplanar fixator and afterwards evaluated (clinically with Maryland-score and radiographically with standard radiographs) 60 patients with displaced intra-articular fractures of the calcaneus.
RESULTS: We’ve reported to the follow-up excellent clinical results in 34 patients (56.6%), good in 22 patients (36.6%), sufficient in 2 patients (3.3%) and poor in 2 patients (3.3%), with an average preoperative Bohler angle of 5.27 (range 0-188) and postoperative of 28.56 (range 16-388).
CONCLUSIONS: We have obtained encouraging functional results, thanks to the possibility of restore the calcaneal volume and Bohler angle, to grant early loading and to the low incidence of complications.
