Background. In the field of biomechanics and dynamics of the foot, the theory of the varying metatarsal weight bearing in now being confirmed. Aim of this paper is to evaluate the results obtained with the baropodometric examination.
Methods. A total of 1180 patients performing a baropodometric examination to assess the physiological plantar weight bearing have been evaluated. The Physical Gait Software has been used and the patients were divided into 2 groups: 380 were normal healthy patients, collected from our outpatients clinic, and 800 were patients collected from our orthopedic department, affected by pathologies that didn't involve the foot. The examination was based on a static and dynamic screening and all the data were collected in a gait software program.
Results. The our results showed that 92 % of all patients presented a higher pressure zone on the forefoot, and precisely on the central metatarsal heads.
Conclusions. This result shows that the ''metatarsal formula'' has to be updated and hopefully it will be supported by future studies.
