Solitary fibrous tumor of the orbit with intracranial involvement
Tomasetti N., Bassi M., Campobassi A.
Maxillofacial Unit, Bufalini Hospital, Cesena, Italy
Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare tumor of mesenchymal origin that most frequently affects the pleura but can occur in any organ with a mesothelial lining such as the pericardium and the mediastinum. Intracranial extension of SFT is rare. To date, only three other cases of orbitocranial SFT have been reported in the literature. This report describes the clinical, radiographic and histologic features of orbitocranial SFT in a male patient treated at the Oral and Maxillofacial Unit, Bufalini Hospital, Cesena. The clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic data are reviewed. Clinical and radiographic information is essential for deciding on appropriate surgical treatment for SFT arising in this unusual location.
