Maxillofacial Surgery Department “La Carità” General Hospital University of Eastern Piedmont, Novara, Ital

In maxillofacial surgery, the possible causes of transitory or permanent damage to the inferior alveolar nerve or to the inferior orbital nerve are numerous (trauma, removal of benign or malignant lesions, extraction of wisdom teeth, orthognathic surgery). The study analysed 123 healthy subjects in order to establish a series of parameters that may in future be used as normal values in interpreting electromyographic data from patients who have undergone damage to these nerves. These reference data are important not least because in future they may be utilised to resolve medico-legal controversies, for example in cases of iatrogenic lesions.
