A brief overview of fungating wounds’ issues and epidemiology

Rowan S.

Clinical Nurse Practitioner, Florence, Italy

There are no exact numbers of the incidence of malignant fungating wounds (MFWs) worldwide or across Europe. Most data is based on estimates made within a given region. From the data it would appear that around 5-10% of patients with cancer will develop a MFWs. They are classed as problematic for all aspects of wound management.
