Although medically and economically important, the burden of chronic wound management has been long underestimated, chiefly because of a lack of recent epidemiologic data which could help to better define the problem and the impact it has on medical care and costs to society and health systems. The effectiveness of a new heterologous equine type I collagen silver-containing spray wound dressing that promotes tissue repair in acute and chronic partial thickness wounds has been recently tested. The spray dressing demonstrated a number of advantages: easy application, shorter healing time, better control of perilesional skin and pain, and promotion of re-epithelialization.
