Anatomical variations of the superficial internal epigastric vein compared with the saphenofemoral junction: a preliminary study

AIM: Varicose vein surgery is the most common surgical procedure whose fundamental aim is to prevent recurrences. An uncorrected varicose vein surgery can be due to a lack of understanding of the anatomical variations of the sapheno-femoral junction (SFJ). The most important anatomical variation occurs in the SFJ.
METHODS: During surgery we paid specific attention to the junction of the superficial internal epigastric vein (SIEV) and we measured through a surgical centimeter the distance between the ESI junction with the saphenous vein and SFJ. We also paid specific attention to the other collateral veins which do not usually be considered during this type of surgery.
RESULTS: The wide variability of the saphenous femoral junction suggests special attention to the study with ultrasound and induces caution in the indication to endovascular interventions.
CONCLUSION: The results of the study induced our school to not change the radical crossectomy surgical technique but to improve our surgical competence about SFJ to better observe its anatomical variants.
